It's Never Too Early

My friend and I carpool to preschool each week and this week was my week to drive. I love to hear the conversations that go on in the car between Kennedy and her friend, Gracie. On this particular morning, I especially liked overhearing their little conversation. Kennedy and Pieper had left one of their barbies in the car from the day before and her outfit was a ballet-type tutu. Gracie is always full of questions and likewise full of a lot of answers. I love it. This morning was no different. They quickly started talking about the barbie and this is how the conversation went between them:

Gracie, "Her clothes are immodest. She doesn't have sleeves and her dress doesn't go down to her knees. Tinkerbell isn't modest too." (Gracie has a Tinkerbell schoolbag.)
Kennedy, "Well, that's just how Tinkerbell is."
Gracie, "Well, do you want to be immodest like Tinkerbell?"

As a mom of two girls, and who knows, maybe a 3rd on the way, I so appreciated hearing this come out of a 5-year-old's mouth. It reminded me that it's never too early to teach our children about modesty and what is right and what isn't right for them to be wearing. I so appreciated my mom teaching me the simple principle of modesty and self-respect for when the time came for me to go through the temple, there were very few things I had to change about my wardrobe. I hope I can teach these same principles to my girls and have them set the standard to their friends just like Gracie did today. Kudos to Nicole for setting that standard for her girls!

And as a Mother of boys...THANK YOU both! It means a lot to us as well, maybe not as much now as it will in 15 years! Good job!!!

That's too cute, little girls...little girls! I agree, as soon as they are aware, the whole modesty thing needs to be instilled and it's the most rewarding experience for us as parents when you hear or see your girls making good choices on their own, I've got a few of my own modesty stories...I won't fill up your blog but they make a parent proud. Yah for Kennedys little frined, that's really sweet at such a young age!

Hey Sarah,
That Gracie, she is a quick study. As a parent you never know what is sinking in and what is glossing over their heads. I am glad to know that she is taking that in. Too bad for Tinkerbell...

I remember my kids having a similar conversation. In the end my niece said to Kambri "I will neber wear sumping un-modest!" And Kambri said, "I wanna be a cheerleader and wear that little skirt!"

Just to clarify, that was about 9 years ago.

That is SO great! My daughters have also discussed the modesty of various Disney characters. The world needs more kids like yours to teach others the right way to be!
