Pieper at Two

Today was Pieper's 2-year old well-child exam. At two years old, Pieper weighs 24 lbs. and is 32 inches tall- that still puts her in the 10th percentile! We're starting to wonder if she'll ever grow out of that range?! She also had her follow-up appointment at Children's Hospital yesterday for her VSD (hole in the heart) and WPW (an extra electrical signal - or connection- in the heart). Despite any kind of effort on my part or the kind nurses, she was not cooperative at all. You see, ever since being born, she's had to spend a little bit more time than other children at doctor's offices and consequently, she's developed a real aversion to them. This time around at Children's she only had to have an EKG. It was great- we were in and out in 30 minutes! I think that's better than ANY doctor's appointment I've ever been to! The good news is, the cardiologist found no murmur indicating the hole has probably completely closed by now and her WPW isn't giving her any kind of troubles. It still exists, but since she hasn't had any kind of signs or problems of a rapid heart rate, we just continue life as normal and we don't have to go back for our next visit for 2 years! We are incredibly grateful for this news. As I sat in the waiting room of the cardiology department, a small corridor to many other significant happenings at Children's Hospital, I looked at all the families- parents, grandparents, struggling children, healthy children and think about everything they must being going through. I see newborns with oxygen tanks hooked up to them, I see adolescents in wheelchairs, children seemingly "healthy" but knowingly with something wrong or they woudn't be there, and I can't help but think what a miracle a healthy child is. I am so grateful for my two healthy children and all 25 of my healthy nieces and nephews. We are truly blessed.

That is wonderful news!! Your girls are gorgeous! Glad everything went well. My kids were always in the negative 5th percentile so I know what you mean! They were these scrawny kids who were so tiny! Trust me they grow!! Good news that things are looking better with her heart! So scary!!

Happy to hear that Peiper is good to go, always forget that she even had a heart condition since you'd never know by looking at her and her energy! We count our blessings pretty much every Sunday as far as healthy children! (The home make-over show to deserving families) Last week there was this familiy with four young children all with a life threatning disease (the kids all looked normal on the outside) but they all had to be fed by feeding tubes, ect., couldn't even imagine! They made the home really sterile, w/ the cleanest surfaces & finishes, filtered air to breathe as so on. It makes you look at life and the fagileness of it a little different! Anyways, happy to hear the good news.

I know what you're talking about. We spend plenty of time at Children's with our little guy. He's one of the ones, like yours, that look healthy on the outside, but his insides don't work. He doesn't like those appointments either, but we are always there for at least a couple of hours. I am so grateful that they have great doctors and specialists that can help sick children. I'm glad that Piper is on the uphill.
